Foot Orthotics

  • What are foot orthotics?

Customised foot orthoses are devices unique to the anatomy of your foot and fit comfortably in your footwear. Customised foot orthoses are prescribed to treat foot, ankle, leg and lower back pain. They are designed to improve foot posture, enhance foot function to reduce lower limb injury risk and optimise performance. We can prescribe a range of styles of foot orthoses to comfortably fit into your choice of footwear including trainers, football boots, athletic spikes, casual shoes, ski boots, school shoes and dress shoes.

  • How do foot orthotics work?

Foot orthoses work by facilitating the loading of tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones) to fall back into its optimal capacity. With our clinical understanding of the biomechanics of the lower limb and influencing forces we can use foot orthoses to achieve our treatment goals. This might be to reduce pain and symptoms in some people, improve mobility, enhance foot and ankle function or to assist on a performance level.

  • Are foot orthotics for everyone?

Custom foot orthoses are not always necessary and are not recommended to everyone. It will depend on your injury presentation, biomechanical findings, and treatment goals. We have plenty of other treatment modalities including temporary foot orthoses, Emily Braidwood insoles, footwear advice, strapping and padding for a short term treatment plans.

Foot Orthoses Process

  • Maddie performing gait analysis with a patient with footpain. Scanning for orthotics.

    1. Casting/Scanning

Following your consultation and gait analysis a treatment plan will be discussed with you and the Podiatrist. For custom foot orthoses a 3D scan or plaster of Paris cast of your feet will be taken.

  • Custom Orthotics prescription and review with the patient. Firefly orthotics.

    2. Prescription

We will then write your prescriptions considering your biomechanics, foot pathology, footwear, weight and shoe size. Accurately picking out the material and mechanical structure of the foot orthotic to fit your needs. The scan/cast and prescription is then sent to our trusted foot orthotic lab to be processed and manufactured.

  • Foot orthoses fitting into shoe.

    3. Fitting

Once your foot orthotic devices have been completed they’ll be sent to MT Podiatry where we will then book a fitting appointment with you. Our fitting appointments should last no more than 30 minutes and allows us to make sure the devices are the right fit for you. We will discuss a breaking in procedure so you are comfortably wearing in the devices slowly. The whole process should take 4 weeks from cast to fitting. We will then follow up with you to see how you are getting on.
